ilam was a trading town before it was a trek. The route up the Gori Ganga from Munsiyari was the Shauka trade road to Tibet, and Milam village sat at its head — hundreds of households moving wool, salt, and grain across the passes. The border closed in 1962 and the trade died in a single season. The village mostly emptied, and the stone houses still stand near the glacier snout, which is what makes this walk unlike any other glacier approach in India: you arrive at ice through a ghost economy.
The 1962 war closed the Tibet passes overnight. A town that had traded for centuries lost its entire reason to exist in a season. What you walk through now — lanes, courtyards, carved lintels — is what was left behind.
This is border country. Inner Line Permit required; carry ID and copies, and expect checkposts to actually check.
Road work continues along the Gori Ganga, and trek distances shorten as it advances. Verify the current roadhead in Munsiyari before you plan stages — printed itineraries go stale fast here.
Village stays and seasonal huts along the route, nothing more. Carry a sleeping bag even if you plan on roofs.
Much of the route runs through the Gori Ganga gorge — narrow, loud, and prone to slips in rain. This is a walked trade road, not a groomed trail.
You reach Milam village in the late afternoon, when the light comes down the valley sideways. The lanes are silent. Doorways open onto rooms that have been empty for sixty years, and the carving above the doors is still sharp. Behind the village, the glacier sits in its moraine like something waiting.
