About Rameshwaram

Rameshwaram is located on a beautiful island in Tamil Nadu, separated from Sri Lanka by the small Pamban channel. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Rama built a bridge across the sea to Lanka here. Rameshwaram has the first sea bridge connecting Mandapam with Pamban Island. The abandoned town of DhanushkodiDhanushkodi on the island was destroyed by a 1964 cyclone and is now a hauntingly beautiful ghost town. The Ramanathaswamy TempleRamanathaswamy Temple is renowned for its magnificent prakaras with massive sculptured pillars — it houses the longest corridor in the world. Agniteertham is famous for sacred waters where pilgrims perform poojas. The five-faced Hanuman Temple holds the floating stone believed to have been used to build the bridge between India and Sri Lanka. Rameshwaram is one of the four Char Dhams of India.
