About Puri

Puri in Odisha is one of the four Char Dhams of Hinduism, home to the Jagannath TempleJagannath Temple — one of India's most important pilgrimage centres. The massive temple with its 65m sikhara dominates the skyline and is the origin of the word 'juggernaut' — from the annual Rath Yatra (chariot festival) when three massive chariots are pulled through the streets by thousands. Non-Hindus are not permitted inside the temple but can view from the rooftop of the nearby Raghunandan Library. Puri Beach is one of eastern India's most popular beaches. The Chilika Lake (Asia's largest brackish water lagoon, 60 km south) is home to Irrawaddy dolphins and migratory birds. Konark Sun TempleKonark Sun Temple (UNESCO World Heritage Site, 35 km away) — designed as a massive stone chariot with 24 intricately carved wheels — is an architectural marvel. The Puri Mahaprasad (temple food) served on banana leaves is legendary.
