About Aurangabad

Aurangabad (officially renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) is the gateway to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites — the Ajanta CavesAjanta Caves and Ellora CavesEllora Caves. The Ajanta CavesAjanta Caves (30 rock-cut Buddhist caves from the 2nd century BC) contain some of the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art, particularly the exquisite murals. The Ellora CavesEllora Caves (34 caves spanning Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain traditions from the 6th-11th centuries) house the Kailasa Temple — the largest monolithic rock excavation in the world, carved top-down from a single basalt cliff. Within the city, the Bibi Ka MaqbaraBibi Ka Maqbara is a 17th-century tomb modelled on the Taj Mahal (often called the Poor Man's Taj). Daulatabad Fort — once an impregnable medieval fortress — and the Panchakki (water mill) add to the city's rich heritage.
